but go ahead, sir. >> romney: you bet. mr. president you are absolutely right with regards to 97% of the businesses are not taxed at the 35% tax rate. they are taxed at a lower rate. but those businesses happen to employee half -- half of all of the people who work in small business. those are the businesses that employ one quarter of all of the businesses in america. i talked to a guy who has a very small business. he is in the electronics business in st. louis. he said he and his son calculated how much they pay in taxes. federal tax, state tax, state income tax gasoline tax, it added up to well over 50% of what they earned. and your plan is to take the tax rate successful small businesses from 35% to 40%. that will cost jobs. my priority is jobs so what i do is bring down the tax rates, lower deductions and exemptions. create more jobs because there's nothing better for getting us to an balanced budget than having more people working, earning more money, paying more taxes, that's by far the more efficient way to get this ba

you heard the president last night with mr. romney. mr. romney being a different mr. romney than we've seen him for the last 18 months or the last section years. do you think even with the new hit romney that showed up last night when he starts talking about states' rights, when he starts talking about regulation or deregulation, when he starts saying he doesn't advocate $5 trillion tax cut when in fact the numbers prove that he does and has been advocating that, will that resonate with independent voters and/or undecided voters in your state of ohio? >> i don't think so. i think people realize that governor romney is still wrong on medicare and still wrong on trade and still wrong on jobs and still wrong on the middle class. i think that's increasingly clear. again it goes back to which path do you go. do you want to go back to the trickle down economics you give tax cuts to the rich and hope it helps the middle class or do you focus on the middle class and that's trait enforcement, it's i don't think training at community colleges like columbus state and sinclair. i

romney would do if he became president. mr. romney has said recently and vaguely that he supports what president obama is doing in afghanistan in terms of there being a timeline for leaving but he has also said he was against a timeline for leaving in the past. so really who knows? he's not even trying. the closest we've gotten to any competing cogent republican position on the war is probably what we got from senator john mccain at the republican convention when he said that the afghanistan war just shouldn't end. he also thinks that the iraq war shouldn't have ended. so i'm not sure that it's a politically viable position. even if it is an internally cogent one from the senator. for this year's nominee, it's apparently just not going to happen. not unless he starts it now. 40 days out, mitt romney did get as close as he gets to talking about the issue today. in that he spoke before a group of veterans and talked about a concern about veterans. even if he didn't say what he wanted to do about that concern. mr. romney, in fact,
